Dr Josh Smalley – We are delighted to welcome Josh Smalley as our Baking School Tutor for 2026. Dr Josh is a passionate baker and science communicator who reached the final of the 2023 series of The Great British Bake Off, winning admiration for his creativity, precision, and calm approach.

Equally accomplished in the laboratory and the kitchen, he founded the Science Kitchen at the University of Leicester in 2024, bringing together science and baking through engaging lectures, demonstrations and online content designed to inspire the next generation. At the Three Counties Baking School, he will be channelling that same enthusiasm into hands-on sessions for young people, helping them build skills, confidence, and curiosity through baking.

A long-standing advocate for science outreach, Dr Josh is passionate about making complex ideas accessible and exciting. Outside work, he enjoys rugby and tending his Leicestershire kitchen garden, where fresh produce, giant vegetables and even homegrown grapes all reflect his belief that science is the recipe for success.
